US Premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth's Locke's Theatre with Cleveland Orchestra

Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in the US premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth’s Locke’s Theatre on March 6 and 8 at Cleveland’s Severance Hall. The work was commissioned by the Aldeburgh Festival for the Britten “100” celebration and received its world premiere by Oliver Knussen and the BBC Symphony Orchestra during the official Britten Centenary Concert in November. Of the piece, Wigglesworth writes:

[Locke’s Theatre] takes as its departure point incidental music written for Shakespeare’s The Tempest by the seventeenth-century English composer Matthew Locke. Aspects of Locke’s idiosyncratic and daringly advanced harmonic and rhythmic language were to be adopted (some might say perfected) by his younger friend and protégé Henry Purcell. But it is the very rawness and directness of Locke’s theatre music that I wished to acknowledge and emulate.

The program includes a pre-concert “Meet the Composer” interview with Wigglesworth, who is currently the orchestra's Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow.
