US Premiere of Peter Eötvös's <em>Senza sangue</em> with New York Philharmonic

On May 1 in Cologne, Alan Gilbert led the New York Philharmonic in the world concert premiere of Senza sangue, a new opera in one act by Peter Eötvös. The orchestra returns to New York for the work’s US concert premiere on May 8 at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. Gilbert leads the orchestra with soloists Anne Sofie von Otter, mezzo-soprano and Russell Braun, baritone.

Senza sangue was jointly commissioned by The Cologne Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. Eötvös composed the opera, after the eponymous novel by Italian writer Alessandro Baricco, as a one-act pairing for Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle. Mari Mezei’s libretto, based on the concluding section of the novel, tells the story of a girl whose family was murdered at the hands of a young man and his companions in the midst of a civil war. The opera’s narrative spans a lifetime, from the scene of the murder to the encounter between the woman and the assailant many decades later. A complex story unfolds that raises questions about faith, revenge, and the discovery of a meaningful life after trauma.

Following the US premiere, Senza sangue receives further concert performances in Sweden with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra on April 22 and 23, 2016 and in Norway with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra on April 28, 2016, with the composer conducting the premiere cast. The work’s stage premiere is scheduled for May 15 and 17, 2016 in France with Opera Avignon, combined with a production of Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle.
