North American Premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's <em>Concertino</em> and Preview of "100 for 100" from PWM Edition

On October 4, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, led by Hannu Lintu, will present the North American premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's Concertino for trumpet and orchestra, featuring Norwegian trumpet virtuoso Tine Thing Helseth. The work is Penderecki's only concerto for trumpet.

Penderecki turns 85 next month which also coincides with the 100th anniversary of Polish independence. In honor of this national celebration, PWM Edition presents ‘100 for 100. Musical Decades of Freedom’, a project which, besides its artistic dimension, will be of historical promotional and educational importance for Poland, allowing audiences around the world to become acquainted with a representative sample of music written by Polish composers over the last 100 years.

Featuring a selection of the 100 most important works of Polish music chosen by the PWM team, the works selected for publication and recording will include works by protagonists of inter-war modernism, such as Karol Szymanowski, modern-day classics, like Witold Lutosławski and Andrzej Panufnik, representatives of the Polish Composition School, led by Tadeusz Baird, Krzysztof Penderecki and Kazimierz Serocki, composers with an exceptionally strong connection to the national-Catholic tradition, such as Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Wojciech Kilar, the current generation of sexagenarians, including Eugeniusz Knapik, Aleksander Lasoń, Paweł Szymański and Tadeusz Wielecki, and younger composers achieving success on the international music scene: Paweł Łukaszewski, Paweł Mykietyn and Agata Zubel.

The project will be crowned by a series of concerts on November 11 which will include 11 concerts held in Poland and 11 concerts performed internationally from New York to Tokyo and in many cities in between. A complete listing of these events may be found here.
