US Premiere of Kamran Ince's <em>Nihavent Longa</em>; Premiere Recording of <em>Songs In Other Words</em>

2015 is off to an exciting start for Kamran Ince, as his Nihavent Longa is set to receive its US premiere and the German quintet Spark releases the premiere recording of his Songs In Other Words on their new album Wild Territories from Berlin Classics.

Nihavent Longa, for wind ensemble, receives its US premiere on March 10 in Seattle at the University of Washington’s Meany Theater. The work is based on the popular Turkish dance song of the same name, which is built on the Turkish nihavent scale, or maqam, and the Western Turkish dance style called longa. It was commissioned and premiered by the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble on the occasion of Queen Beatrix’s state visit to Ankara, Turkey in February 2007. The University of Washington Symphonic Band performs the US premiere under the baton of Steven Morrison.

Spark, the “classical band” from Germany, gave the world premiere of Ince’s Songs In Other Words in 2014. The group enjoys an ongoing collaborative relationship with Ince, whom they commissioned to write Two Step Passion and which they featured on their 2012 album, Folk Songs. With Songs In Other Words, Ince reinterprets several works from Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words and adapts them to Spark’s unique instrumentation of recorder, melodica, violin, cello, and piano. Like Mendelssohn’s original works, Songs In Other Words presents a variety of short sketches, which are interspersed throughout the album.
