US Premiere of Julian Anderson's <em>Incantesimi</em> with the Boston Symphony Orchestra

Christoph von Dohnányi leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the US premiere of Julian Anderson’s Incantesimi, on January 26 at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Subsequent performances take place January 27 and 28.

Co-commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, which gave the world premiere in 2016, as well as by the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Incantesimi is a study in long lines, using “five musical ideas that orbit each other in ever-differing relationships.” Anderson wrote Incantesimi specifically with the Berlin Philharmonic’s sound in mind: 

I hear a special quality in the way the Berlin Philharmonic colors slow music. I also think Sir Simon Rattle has a wonderful way of carrying and characterizing long lines. There’s rhythm and flow. So I decided to write something showing off that. In Incantesimi, I use five musical ideas that orbit each other in ever differing relationships, somewhat like planets in an orrery. The cor anglais plays a special role with recurring solo lines. The work is an eight-minute span of time on the outside, but it gives a sense of being much more expansive, which is an illusion only music can give.

Also this month, Markus Stenz leads the Hallé Orchestra and soloist Carolin Widmann in Anderson’s violin concerto In lieblicher Bläue (January 12) and the Remix Ensemble gives the Portuguese premiere of Van Gogh Blue, led by Peter Rundel (January 21).
