US Premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s Doghouse On Wordless Music Series
May. 04, 2011
On May 20 and 21, 2011, the Wordless Music Series presents the US premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s Doghouse at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, performed by the Signal ensemble and the Wordless Music Orchestra conducted by Brad Lubman. The program also features György Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto, and Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 4 (“Heroes”). Greenwood’s largest and longest piece to date, Doghouse is scored for string trio and large orchestra and premiered in London in February of 2010, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and Robert Ziegler. The premiere came as part of Greenwood’s ongoing residency with the BBC CO, begun in 2004 with the premiere of Popcorn Superhet Receiver. Greenwood writes:
There's supposed to be a theme (or at least a source of inspiration) in music like this, but it's hard to pin down now as I write this. I was always mindful of who I was writing for – the orchestra, its players, its background in ‘light music’ and theme tunes, and its status as part of an institution. And that there had once been specific Radio, Dance and Theatre Orchestras as part of the BBC, as well as various regional variations. […] I took textural ideas from how sheet music would sound after being physically damaged, and an orchestra having to play with what's left.
In addition to Radiohead’s newest album, The King of Limbs, Greenwood has also been working on adapting themes from Doghouse for the cinematic adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s novel Norwegian Wood, directed by Anh Hung Tran. The soundtrack to the film is available for sale on Nonesuch records here.
