Georg Friedrich Haas's concerto grosso No. 1 in US Premiere with the Los Angeles Philharmonic

On April 1, the Los Angeles Philharmonic performs the US premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’s concerto grosso No. 1 for 4 alphorns and orchestra with conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the HORNROH Modern Alphorn Quartet

concerto grosso No. 1 was co-commissioned by Musica Viva of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Modern, the Zurich Tonhalle, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, and received its world premiere on March 28 with Susanna Mälkki leading HORNROH and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Much of Haas’s compositional approach has been dedicated to spectral and microtonal techniques; for concerto grosso No. 1, the composer views the alphorns not “as symbols of folklorist culture, but rather as the source of another dimension of intonation (overtone chords), used to create contrast and to expand the traditional twelve-tone tuning of the symphony orchestra.”

Also this month, Haas’s Introduktion und Transsonation receives a performance at McGill University with the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble conducted by Guillaume Bourgogne.
