US Premiere of Chaya Czernowin's <em>Miniatures</em> at University of Minnesota; <em>HIDDEN</em> at Maerzmusik Berlin

The University of Minnesota School of Music hosts Chaya Czernowin as composer-in-residence in March. Among the events is a portrait concert of Czernowin’s chamber works on March 12, including the US premiere of Miniatures for amplified ensemble and singer. Composed in 1998 for ELISION ensemble, Miniatures (six miniatures and a simultaneous song) comprises two different and simultaneous strands of music between two differentiated ensemble groups, which effectively evolve in counterpoint with one another as they merge into a unified work. Other pieces on the program include Drift (Sahaf) for ensemble, fardanceCLOSE for solo piano, and the last leaf for solo sopranino saxophone.

On March 24, the JACK Quartet and IRCAM give a performance of Czernowin’s recent and monumental work for string quartet and electronics, HIDDEN, at Maerzmusik Festival in Berlin. Czernowin describes the work as “a very slow moving, 45-minute experience, which transforms the ear into an eye.” HIDDEN is a striking aural landscape that offers a unique opportunity for sonic observation and perceptual exploration.
