US Premiere of Anders Hillborg's Violin Concerto No. 2 with James Ehnes and the Minnesota Orchestra

The Minnesota Orchestra opens its 2017-18 season on September 14 with the American premiere of Anders Hillborg’s Violin Concerto No. 2, led by Music Director Osmo Vänskä and featuring soloist James Ehnes.

Hillborg’s Violin Concerto No. 2 was jointly commissioned by an international consortium of major orchestras, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (who gave its premiere in 2016 with violinist Lisa Batiashvili), the Gewanhausorchester Leipzig, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra. The work was an instant success following its premiere performances in Stockholm and Leipzig—hailed by the Leipziger Volkszeitung as “fresh and skillfully constructedvirtuosic unbelievably exciting. It progresses with a directly speaking, timeless, beauty.”

The work differs significantly from Hillborg’s Violin Concerto No. 1, composed in 1992 for the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. While his first concerto sought to redefine the relationship between the soloist and the orchestra, the new work puts a greater focus, as well as extraordinary demands, on the soloist. Following its US debut, the work receives its respective national premieres with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (November 3), Finnish Radio Symphony (November 24) and the BBC Symphony Orchestra (November 29).
