The Mannes Orchestra Performs the US Premiere of Alvin Singleton's Across Differences at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall

On March 13, the Mannes Orchestra, led by David Hayes, will perform the US premiere of Alvin Singleton's Across Differences at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. The work was first performed in February, 2018 by The Youth Symphonic Orchestra of Russia, led by Alexis Soriano at the Zimnij Theatre in Sochi as part of the 11th Anniversary Winter International Arts Festival Sochi, Russia. Alvin Singleton describes the work:

"The title of this piece, Across Differences, identifies the work as all titles do, but it doesn't tell us what it is. In some ways, it can refer to the differences between cultures, but it also refers to my thought process. I fell in love with the musical material [in Across Differences] as I was composing, and I took chances in how I used that material throughout the piece."

In addition, on March 25, Ensemble Modern, under the baton of Lin Liao, perform Alvin Singleton's Again at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, Mozart Saal in Frankfurt, Germany as part of a concert titled "Afro-Modernism in Contemporary Music." They will play the work again on April 7 in Amsterdam at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Großer Saal.

Again, a chamber orchestra piece for 14 players, was commissioned by the Austrian Radio and awarded the Musikprotokoll kompositionpreis. It lives sonically in two worlds, jazz and classical. Winds, brasses, strings, piano and percussion cycle through a variety of solos and ensemble textures. Again was first performed by London Sinfonietta in 1979 at the Styrian Autumn Festival in Graz, Austria.
