David Sawer's music captures its listener's ear and interest from the very first sound. His compositions have often been inspired by ideas drawn from theater and the dramatic arts. "I write a piece of music, but I think it's about what you don't say.", he once stated in an interview. "Many of my compositional decisions are dictated by theater, by what is lying underneath the surface." This becomes evident for instance in his orchestral compositions Byrnan Wood and Flesh and Blood, in his ensemble works Hollywood Extra to accompany a silent film and The Lighthouse Keepers and his ballet Rumpelstiltskin, existing also in a shorter version as a Suite. A film version of Rumpelstilskin is currently in the making. Among his most performed compositions are his orchestral work the greatest happiness principle and the ensemble piece Tiroirs

Universal Edition has created a page on their website filled with well-wishes from conductor and musician colleagues for his 60th birthday. Read them here.
