Arvo Pärt's "Passions" in Italy and Austria Envisioned by Robert Wilson
Mar. 30, 2023
On March 31 and April 1, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma presented Adam's Passion, a production by Robert Wilson based on Pärt's works: Adam's Lament, Tabula rasa, Miserere, and Sequentia.
Theater magician Robert Wilson pays homage to Arvo Pärt with a musical and theater production that was premiered in May 2015 in Tallinn. For this project, Arvo Pärt selected three major compositions from his oeuvre: the two choral works Adam’s Lament and Miserere, and the double violin concerto Tabula rasa. This is joined by Sequentia, a work composed by Pärt especially for this production.
Directed by Tõnu Kaljuste, performers include soloists, orchestra, and chorus of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in association with the Scuola di Danza del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Among the principal soloists in the production are Lucinda Childs, Michael Theophanous, Endro Roosimäe, Erki Laur and Tatjana Kosmõnina.
In addition, Pärt's Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem (St. John's Passion) premieres in a new version for four saxophones, organ, and voices by the Raschèr Quartet, organist Christian Dolcet and acclaimed soloists, under the direction of Franz M. Herzog, on April 7 at the Helmut List Halle in Graz, Austria.
