Toshio Hosokawa Featured at the Tongyeong International Music Festival

Toshio Hosokawa will be the featured composer at the Tongyeong International Music Festival in Korea from March 29th to April 7th, with multiple concerts featuring his operas, orchestral works and chamber works presented throughout the duration of the festival.

The Korean premiere of Hosokawa’s opera Futari Shizuka - The Maiden from the Sea will be presented during the festival’s first three days by Ryoko Aoki (Noh performer), Sarah Wegener (soprano) and the Ensemble TIMF conducted by Shi-Yeon Sung. The world premiere of the one-act opera, which was commissioned by Ensemble Intercontemporain, was presented at Cité de la musique in Paris in December 2017. Since then it has had critically acclaimed national premieres in Germany and Canada. The festival’s production will be the first staged performance in Asia.

Futari Shizuka - The Maiden from the Sea, is a contemporary take on ‘Futari Shizuka’ by Oriza Hirata, based on the 12th-century Noh theatre piece. In the opera, the tragic stories of two women, Shizuka (a Noh performer) and a young refugee (soprano), come together through 900 years of time and space until their voices ultimately become one. The most remarkable part of Futari Shizuka lies in the meticulous music, in the weaving of song, narration and dance through the universal theme of the purification of human souls.

The highly anticipated performance of Futari Shizuka - The Maiden from the Sea, is led by Shi-Yeon Sung, who was chosen as the first female assistant conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2007 and is now the first ever female conductor to lead a Korean national orchestra. The Korean premiere of Hosokawa’s Voyage V featuring soprano Sarah Wegener and Noh performer Ryoko Aoki will be performed in the same event.

In addition, Landscape I and Blossoming will be performed by the Arditti Quartet on April 3rd, and Fragmente Ⅱ by the Arditti Quartet with Yubeen Kim (flute) on April 5th. The Korean premiere of Drawing will be presented by the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble led by Lio Kuokman on April 7th.
