Tobias Picker's Thérèse Raquin Performed at the University of Alabama
Mar. 10, 2022
The University of Alabama Opera Theatre performed Tobias Picker's opera, Thérèse Raquin, on March 4-6 at Bryant Jordan Hall. The production, directed by Paul Houghtaling and conducted by Jamie Reeves, was presented in conjunction with a conference titled “Émile Zola, Naturalism, and Protest” co-sponsored by The AIZEN® (Association Internationale Zola et Naturalisme) and The University of Alabama.
Thérèse Raquin was commissioned by The Dallas Opera, L’Opéra de Montréal, and The San Diego Opera, and was given its world premiere by The Dallas Opera in 2001. The work debuted to universal critical acclaim, hailed as “a superbly crafted stage work” (Dallas-Forth Worth Star-Telegram). It is one of Tobias Picker's finest works for the lyric stage.
Thérèse Raquin is a story of love, lust, murder, and guilt—a drama perfectly suited for the operatic stage. Scheer’s libretto focuses on the turbulent affair of Thérèse, who rekindles a passionate romance with her old friend Laurent and is driven to murder her sickly husband Camille.
