Tobias Picker, Bernard Rands, and Andrew Norman at Tanglewood

Concert music is starting once again to fill the air in the Berkshire Mountains as the Boston Symphony Orchestra retreats to its summer residence at Tanglewood. This year’s Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music, directed by Charles Wuorinen, features the music of Tobias Picker, Bernard Rands, and Andrew Norman, conducted and performed by several of today’s leading musicians and conductors. On August 4, Brad Lubman conducts Tobias Picker’s Sextet No. 2 at Seiji Ozawa Hall; on August 7, Ursula Oppens performs Picker’s Four Etudes for Ursula and Bernard Rands’ Tre Espressioni.

The closing concert of the festival, following Ursula Oppens’ solo performance on August 7, begins with Stefan Asbury conducting the Tanglewood premiere of Andrew Norman’s clangorous and exhilarating orchestral work drip blip sparkle spin glint glide glow float flop chop pop splatter splash. Andrew Norman also debuts a new string quartet this summer at New York’s Caramoor Festival with the Jasper String Quartet on August 4.
