Thomas Adès and Ian Bostridge at Carnegie Hall
Nov. 21, 2011

Thomas Adès visits Carnegie Hall in a recital with Tenor and frequent collaborator Ian Bostridge on Monday, November 28. Performing on the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, the duo will perform a program that spans generations of classical music with Adès’ Darkness Visible, John Dowland’s In darkness let me dwell, György Kurtág’s Holderlin: An…, and Schumann’s Dichterliebe, as well as selections from Schubert’s Schwanengesang, songs by Liszt, and Liszt’s solo piano work: Sonetto123 del Petrarca from Années de pèlerinage, Deuxième année.
Adès’ new orchestral work Polaris premiered with Michael Tilson Thomas and The San Francisco Symphony in September of 2011 and EMI has released a 2-CD retrospective album on the occasion of the composer’s 40th birthday. The album incorporates works composed over nearly 20 years and features collaborations with the Endellion and Arditti quartets, the London Sinfonietta, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and soloists Susan Bickley and Anthony Marwood. The recording also features premiere recordings of his solo piano works Mazurkas and Concert Paraphrase on Powder Her Face, performed by the composer. Order Adès: Anthologyhere.
An accomplished academic, Mr. Bostridge’s recent book, A Singer’s Notebook (published September 2011/Faber and Faber), takes a look at the multi-faceted world of classical music through his eyes. Consisting of short essays and reviews written since 1997, some in diary form, its range covers serious issues (music and transcendence) and not so serious (his battles with phlegm), while inevitably discussing many of the composers with whom Mr. Bostridge has become identified, such as Britten, Henze, Janácek , Schubert, Weill, and Wolf.
