The San Francisco Symphony Gives the US Premiere of Danny Elfman's Cello Concerto

Nov. 21, 2022

Following successful launches of the work in Vienna and Paris earlier this year, the San Francisco Symphony, under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, gave the US premiere of Danny Elfman's Cello Concerto featuring Gautier Capuçon as soloist. Following the US Premiere  on November 11, the work was performed again on November 12 and 13

Danny Elfman’s Cello Concerto premiered at the Wiener Konzerthaus on March 18, with a further performance on March 20. Gautier Capuçon was the soloist, joined by conductor David Robertson and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra The concerto was cast in four movements like Elfman’s 2017 Violin Concerto and his Percussion Concerto. The piece received subsequent performances by the Orchestre Philharmonie de Radio France, led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada and featuring Gautier Capuçon in Paris in May. The Cello Concerto is a joint commission from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Konzerthaus, Orchestre Philharmonie de Radio France and the San Francisco Symphony.
