The "Letter Aria" from Tobias Picker's An American Tragedy In Concert Version Premiere at San Francisco Opera
Jul. 01, 2006
The San Francisco Opera was the site on June 22 for the world premiere of the concert version of Tobias Picker's "Letter Aria" from An American Tragedy. Soprano Patricia Racette was joined by the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, conducted by Donald Runnicles. The aria, in which a pregnant Roberta Alden pleads for her lover Clyde Griffiths to come and marry her, is preceded by the brief Overture to Act II. The Overture combined with the "Letter Aria" now forms a separate concert aria scene for soprano and orchestra. It has a duration of five minutes and is available on rental from Schott Music. An American Tragedy was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and premiered there in December 2005. It will be revived by the Met during the 2007-08 season and plans for the European premiere are now underway and soon to be announced.
The San Francisco Opera's summer 2006 season is being billed as "Return of the Divas" and features Patricia Racette, Dolora Zajick, and Ruth Ann Swenson in performances of Madama Butterfly, Joan of Arc, and The Marriage of Figaro respectively. More about the season can be found at www.sfopera.com.
