The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess Triumphs at the Metropolitan Opera
Feb. 01, 2020

The Metropolitan Opera opened its 2019-2020 season with a new production of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. Performances were set to run from September 23 through Februay 1, but the run was extended until February 15 due to overwhelming demand. The New York Times reports that this is the first time in modern history that the Metropolitan Opera is extending an opera's run. A co-production with the English National Opera and the Dutch National Opera, the Metropolitan Opera's production is the first ever to use the definitive performance edition prepared under the auspices of the University of Michigan's Gershwin Initiative. The Met production is directed by James Robinson, conducted by David Robertson, and features Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the leading roles.
