The Essence of György Ligeti on Display at Lincoln Center

Jan. 01, 2006

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center presents a special focus on the great Hungarian master György Ligeti this month. In a mini-festival billed as “The Essence of Ligeti”, the Society presents performances of no less than sixteen works by Ligeti from January 11–17 in a combined concert and lecture series taking place at Alice Tully Hall. The works range from solo piano to chamber orchestra and every imaginable combination in between. Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han comment, "Ligeti has both embodied and transcended his own Eastern European musical heritage, as we shall hear in this extraordinary series of programs. His mastery of chamber music styles - from solo instrument to string quartet to larger ensembles - will be in evidence, at the hands of a special selection of CMS artists and guests who have made Ligeti’s unique voice an integral component of their musical lives."

The distinguished roster of performers includes Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Brentano String Quartet, Imani Winds, Shanghai Quartet, Reinbert de Leeuw, Jeffrey Milarsky, David Starobin, Barbara Hannigan, Omar Ebrahim, Paul Neubauer, William Purvis, and many more. This caps off an astonishing year of Ligeti performances worldwide; among the most notable a new production of Le Grand Macabre at the San Francisco Opera and new choreography to selected works by Christopher Wheeldon for both the San Francisco and New York City Ballets. Wheeldon has called Ligeti the Chopin of our time. For more information, program notes, and musical excerpts, please visit www.chambermusicsociety.org.
