The Cleveland Orchestra's 2020-21 Season Features Notable World and U.S. Premieres

Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra have announced their 2020/21 season at Severance Hall. The season of 26 concert weeks, running from September 2020 to May 2021, will be Franz Welser-Möst’s 19th season as music director, and includes a number of exciting works by our composers, including notable world and U.S. premieres.  On September 24, 27, and 30, The Cleveland Orchestra, Chorus, and Chamber Chorus join forces along with a roster of exceptional soloists to perform Morton Feldman's Rothko Chapel on a program that also includes Mozart's Requiem and Ave Verum Corpus.

Thomas Adès's The Exterminating Angel Symphony receives its U.S. premiere on October 1-2 while his Asyla is performed on February 18 and 20alongside Leoš Janáček's Taras Bulba. Arvo Pärt's Fratres (for violin, string orchestra, and percussion) is performed on December 3under the baton of John Adams. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Symphony in F-sharp is performed on March 4 and 6, followed by the U.S. premiere of Jörg Widmann's Viola Concerto (featuring violist Antoine Tamestit and conducted by Daniel Harding) paired with Richard Strauss's An Alpine Symphony on March 18-20.

Under the direction of Semyon Bychkov, the orchestra will give the world premiere of a new work by Julian Anderson on April 8 (with additional performances on April 10-11) alongside Leoš Janáček's Glagolithic Mass. Finally, György Ligeti's Violin Concerto, featuring Leila Josefowicz, is performed on May 13 and 15.
