The City of Sagunto Brings Joaquín Rodrigo's Music Into the Classroom
Feb. 27, 2025
The Education Department of the Sagunto City Council is preparing a new curriculum to introduce the life and music of Joaquín Rodrigo – arguably the most famous composer to have been born in that municipality – to schoolchildren throughout the region.
This month, Sagunto's Councillor for Education, Raúl Palmero and Verónica García, a teacher who created the proposal, explained the details of this initiative, which will consist of collaborative activities that contribute to promoting cooperative learning and interdisciplinary education among students through the figure of the internationally-renowned musician.
Mr. Palmero explained, “It is a project that aims to strengthen education in our centers. I think it is important that we all know about the people, the musicians and the artists who are leaders in Sagunto."
Ms. García concurred, "Presenting this curriculum was a real challenge for me, as the difficulty lay in being able to carry out a series of activities about such a mature author for such a young student body.”
This novel curriculum combines a number of distinct areas of study – music, languages, art and more. In addition, the proposal is designed in such a way that it can be adapted to the particular needs and characteristics of each group, class, and student body, as well as the material and personal resources available in each educational setting. The City Council's decision to create such a creative curriculum around Rodrigo is especially fitting as the composer himself once aptly said, “Music fulfills an important educational function because, above all, it cultivates the spirit.” He also noted, "I have observed that people who are moved by music are more sensitive to all manifestations of life.”
