The Center for Contemporary Opera Presents Hans Werner Henze's <em>El Cimarrón</em>

On January 16 and 17, the Center for Contemporary Opera presents Henze’s epic saga El Cimarrón at Symphony Space in New York City. Based on autobiographical accounts recorded by Miguel Barnet, Henze brings the colorful story of runaway Cuban slave Esteban Montejo to life as “a recital for four musicians” consisting of baritone, flute, guitar, and percussion, all of whom are called upon to play percussion throughout.

Premiered in 1970 at the Berlin Festival, this landmark work has not been heard in New York since 1986. The Center for Contemporary Opera presents a fully staged production led by director Eugenia Arsenis with baritone Eric McKeever portraying the lead role of Esteban Montejo. Maestra Sara Jobin leads members of the Center for Contemporary Opera Orchestra.
