The BBC Symphony Orchestra Presents "Total Immersion: Frank Zappa" at the Barbican

On March 19, the BBC Symphony Orchestra explores life and works of Frank Zappa as the focus of a BBC Symphony Orchestra Total Immersion Day at the Barbican, led by conductor Brad Lubman. They note:

"Ever the experimentalist, Zappa’s music explores influences as diverse as classical modernism, free improvisation, rock and roll virtuosity and cultural satire. Expect the unexpected in a day of film, talks and music charting Zappa’s remarkable career."

The Total Immersion Day begins with a screening of Alex Winter's 2020 landmark documentary "Zappa". The documentary examines the private life behind one of the most extraordinary musical careers of the last century – and the music it produced. Rolling Stone magazine wrote of the film, "you will learn way more about the man than you could possibly imagine."

In the afternoon, The Guildhall School's Ubu Ensemble, led by Simon Wills, perform Frank Zappa's The Perfect Stranger alongside works by Anton Webern, Edgard Varèse, and Igor Stravinsky whose own music inspired Zappa.

Finally, Brad Lubman leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra in performances of various works by Frank Zappa, including Pedro's Dowry, Bob in Dacron and Sad Jane, Envelopes, Mo and Herb's Vacation, and Strictly Genteel.
