The BBC Symphony Orchestra Performs Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 10 at the Barbican

Dec. 01, 2020

On December 13, The BBC Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Dalia Stasevska, performs the first movement of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 10 arranged for chamber orchestra by Michelle Castelletti as part of a program called "The Cosmos". Joining the musicians is preeminent physicist, Professor Brian Cox, who will take listeners on a mind-bending musical voyage through space and time". Professor Cox will discuss, life, death, and the meaning of human existence against a backdrop of music on a truly "universal scale."

Limited in-person tickets have sold out for this event, but tickets for the online livestream may be purchased here.

A noted polymath, musician, and historian, Michelle Castelletti explains her process and rationale in undertaking the arrangement of this exceptional work:

"The issue of re-orchestration has been a long-discussed debate amongst music scholars and performing musicians. My work relates to, and complements, existing musicological studies, as well as several reconstructions for full orchestra that have been made of Mahler’s last symphony."
