The 75th Anniversary of the Tanglewood Festival Features Works by Colin Matthews, Fred Lerdahl, George Perle, Oliver Knussen, Julian Anderson and others

This year, the Tanglewood Music Center celebrates its 75th anniversary and features numerous works by Schott Music/EAM composers, many of which receive performances during the Center’s Festival of Contemporary Music. As part of its anniversary celebration, Tanglewood has commissioned several new works, including Colin Matthews’s String Quartet No. 5 and Fred Lerdahl’s Fire and Ice

Matthews’ describes his new 12-minute, single movement string quartet as “…more restrained and detached than its predecessors, initially concentrating on the silence between the notes as much as on the notes themselves.” Following its world premeire at Tanglewood on July 19, Matthews’s String Quartet No. 5 receives its UK premiere on August 3 at the BBC Proms performed by the Apollon Musagete Quartet. Fred Lerdahl’s Fire and Ice, for soprano and double bass, is a unique setting of Robert Frost’s beloved poem. The work expands on Frost’s own examination of desire and hate, which Lerdahl sets between two equally disparate musical timbres.

Tanglewood’s Festival of Contemporary Music, which runs from July 20-27, also features a performance of Bruno Maderna’s Serenata No. 2 and George Perle’s Critical Moments I on July 23, led by Oliver Knussen. The following evening, John Harbison leads a performance of Luigi Dallapiccola’s Concerto per la Notte di Natale dell’anno 1956, for soprano and chamber orchestra. On the July 26, Stefan Asbury conducts a program that includes Oliver Knussen’s Two Organa, George Perle’s Critical Moments 2, Julian Anderson’s String Quartet No. 2, Hans Werner Henze’s Adagio Adagio, and Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Dark Crossing
