The 5th Hangzhou Contemporary Music Festival Featured an Akira Nishimura Memorial Concert

On October 11, the 5th Hangzhou Contemporary Music Festival, held in Huangzhou, China from October 9-15, presented a memorial concert dedicated to Akira Nishimura who passed away from cancer one day before his 70th birthday in 2023. The portrait concert, performed by members of the Tokyo Sinfonietta under the baton of conductor Natsuki Nishiyama, featured a number of Nishimura's works for various forces, including Karura (2007) for oboe solo, Kalavinka (2006) for solo piano, HIMITU (Frozen Honey) (2019) for flute solo, JYUREI I (2014) for two clarinets, Amrita (2021) for viola, and Fragment and echo for violin, cello, and piano. China's Music Weekly called the event, "a unique musical feast."
