Strong Season for Ligeti Opens as Ballet Tours Canada

Opening a strong season for the music of György Ligeti, The National Ballet of Canada presents Christopher Wheeldon's Polyphonia, a ballet comprised of choreography to Ligeti's piano music, embarking on a 6-city tour from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Vancouver, British Columbia on September 10. In the combination of Ligeti's piano music Wheeldon's choreography, Artistic Advisor Karen Kain sees Polyphonia achieving "an astonishing range of stylistic and formal procedures, locating in each of them emotional insights and physical poetry of dazzling freshness."
September also plays host to a number of performances of Ligeti's chamber music. His Chamber Concerto is performed by Alarm Will Sound conducted by Alan Pierson at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio on September 29 and by Musica Nova of Eastman School of Music conducted by Brad Lubman in Rochester, New York on September 26. Ligeti's Six Miniatures for wind ensemble, arranged by Friedrich Wanek, are performed September 23 by the USC Thornton Wind Ensemble conducted by H. Robert Reynolds in Los Angeles. And his Old Hungarian Ballroom Dances is performed September 16 and 17 by the Chicago Chamber Musicians conducted by Michael Mulcahy in Evanston, Illinois.
Further on in the season, Ligeti continues to loom large. The ballet Essays, choreographed to the music of Ligeti, is taken on a US tour by Armitage Gone! Dance, including performances in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Milwaukee. In November the Atlanta Symphony conducted by Roberto Minzcuk performs Lontano. Early 2008 sees the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Robertson performing Clocks and Clouds and the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Ingo Metzmacher performing San Francisco Polyphony. In April, the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski performs Atmospheres.
