Stewart Wallace's <em>Hopper's Wife</em> "entertaining" and "imaginative" at New York City Opera

In a four-night sold-out run that opened on April 28, New York City Opera delivered the long awaited New York premiere production of Stewart Wallace’s wild and absurdist chamber opera Hopper’s Wife.

The production, directed by Andreas Mitisek and conducted by James Lowe, was hailed as an “entertaining,” “engaging” and “imaginative riff on two cultural icons” (Classical Voice North America). Critics raved that “Wallace’s soaring, often energetic score tingles with excitement… in our current political climate, this tale of reinventing oneself for venal personal ends seems more timely than ever.” (Broadway World)

Michael Korie's boldly original libretto imagines American scene painter Edward Hopper married to Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper with Ava Gardner as the artist’s model. The opera explores the conflicts between high art and low art, gossip and pornography - through the prism of a crumbling, competitive marriage.
