Stefano Gervasoni Portrait at New York's Miller Theatre

Columbia University’s Miller Theatre presents a Composer Portrait Concert highlighting works by Stefano Gervasoni, including the US premiere of In dir, for vocal ensemble, on February 19. The portrait concert features performances by the vocal ensemble Ekmeles, as well as the Mivos Quartet and Yarn/Wire.

In dir, composed for a vocal ensemble of six voices, was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture and premiered in 2003 by Neue Vocalsolisten in Stuttgart as part of the Musik der Jahrhunderte at Theaterhaus Pragsattel. The work is based on thirteen couplets from Angelus Silesius’s sixteenth century poetic epic Der Cherubinischer Wandersmann (The Cherubic Pilgrim). The Independent’s Andy Gill calls the piece “an unnerving but oddly soothing work, for which the composer’s image of an “infinity of leaves and thorns conceals all possible answers” offers an apt metaphor.”

The program also features performances of Gervasoni’s string quartet Six lettres a l’obscurité (und zwei nachrichten), as well as Sviete Tihi “Capriccio dopo la fantasia” for two pianos and two percussionists.
