Star-Studded <em>Street Scene</em> Opens in Madrid

A new production of Street Scene opens at the Teatro Real February 13, featuring a cadre of international opera stars in the lead roles: Patricia Racette as Mrs. Maurrant; 2008 Tony Award winner Paulo Szot as Mr. Maurrant; Joel Prieto, winner of the 2008 Plácido Domingo Operalia Competition, as Sam Kaplan; and Mary Bevan as Rose Maurrant. Director John Fulljames and conductor Tim Murray rejoin forces following their 2013 collaboration on the same opera.

The production runs through February 18 and then returns for five more performances from May 26–June 1. The February 16th performance will be broadcast live on Mezzo Live HD. The production will later travel to Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and Oper Köln in future seasons with dates to be announced.

Also coming up this month: On February 17, HK Gruber leads the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in selections from Der Silbersee. The RTE Concert Orchestra performs Kleine Dreigroschenmusik in Dublin on February 22. Storm Large performs The Seven Deadly Sins with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Anja Bihlmaier, February 23-24. Marcelo Lombardero’s highly acclaimed production of Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny receives its third airing since 2016, this time at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo in Bogotá, February 27 through March 3.
