Sebastian Hilli's Cupido and 1977 – a Violin Concerto Premiere in Finland
Apr. 24, 2025
On May 15-16, John Storgårds and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra will premiere Sebastian Hilli's concerto for clarinet in Bb, Cupido, featuring clarinetist Lauri Sallinen with light art by Jukka Huitila and acrobatics by Karita Tikka. Cupido was commissioned by Hiljaisuus ry and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. The performances are part of the Jubilee celebrations surrounding the 100th anniversary of the birth of artist and professor Reidar Särestöniemi.
In addition, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Nicholas Collon, will premiere Hilli's 1977 – a Violin Concerto at the Musiikkitalo in Helsinki on May 21-22. The soloist is Pekka Kuusisto. Hilli describes his new work:
"In this 12-part violin concerto, written for Pekka Kuusisto, the soloist transports the listener through one year. Each part of the concerto reflects one month and a real-life event in the year of 1977. These events provide a sort of libretto for the work, which together with the music creates a broader story about the human condition, the random nature of life, love, trials and tribulations and, perhaps above all, survival."
