Seattle Symphony's Recording of Henri Dutilleux's <em>L'arbre des songes</em> Wins GRAMMY Award

The Seattle Symphony’s recent recording of Henri Dutilleux’s violin concerto L’arbre des songes has received a 58th Annual GRAMMY Award in the category of “Best Classical Instrumental Solo”. The album features violinist Augustin Hadelich as soloist, with Ludovic Morlot leading the orchestra.

L’arbre des songes was commissioned by Radio France for Isaac Stern, to whom the work is dedicated, and was premiered in 1985 with the Orchestre National de France, led by Lorin Maazel. The piece is comprised of four structural parts that are linked to one another by three orchestral interludes of differing characters and styles. Dutilleux wrote that the piece “grows somewhat like a tree, for the constant multiplication and renewal of its branches is the lyrical essence of the tree. This symbolic image, as well as the notion of seasonal cycle, inspired my choice of L’arbre des songes (The Tree of Dreams) as the title of the piece.”
