Seattle Symphony Debuts Gabriel Prokofiev's Dial 1-900 Mix-A-Lot

On June 6, the Seattle Symphony celebrated the past, present and future of music through its Sonic Evolution project, featuring the world premiere of Gabriel Prokofiev’s Dial 1-900 Mix-A-Lot. Conductor Ludovic Morlot led the premiere, which paired Prokofiev with iconic hip-hop artist Sir Mix-A-Lot to compose a work celebrating the rapper’s rhythmic, textural and harmonic innovation.

For the piece, which was commissioned by Ludovic Morlot and the Seattle Symphony, Prokofiev aimed to "get inside the musical mind of Sir Mix-A-Lot; to understand how his rhythms, textures, sounds and harmonies work, and then to create a contemporary orchestral composition that is true to the music of Sir Mix-A-Lot.”

The program also featured solo performances by Sir Mix-A-Lot of his best-known songs, “Posse on Broadway” and “Baby Got Back”, alongside the orchestra in arrangements by Prokofiev.
