Looking Ahead to #Ligeti100 Programming

Nov. 01, 2020

The most recent edition of the Schott Journal is titled "Facing #Ligeti100", a nod to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great composer, György Ligeti which will take place in 2023. Alongside Ligeti's other two publishers, Edition Peters and Universal Edition Vienna, the Paul Sacher Foundation, and Karsten Witt Musik Management, we would like to invite you to rediscover Ligeti’s music ahead of the 2023 anniversary year. We also invite you to highlight your activities using the hashtag #Ligeti100 and add the anniversary logo which we can offer as a download, thereby enabling us all to work together internationally towards this special event.

Over the course of several informative pages, this edition of the Schott Journal provides a number of suggestions for programming, ranging from well-known to lesser-known compositions, and from almost forgotten works by Ligeti, to those which are still awaiting publication. Ligeti's early works are highlighted and there are special recommendations as well.

It is important to note that György Ligeti was a master of concise form, and his orchestral works are relatively short. The most extensive work with a playing time of around 20 minutes is the Macabre Collagebased on motifs from Ligeti's opera Le Grand Macabre. The piece enjoyed great popularity in the 1990s before Ligeti withdrew it as part of the revision of the opera. Now, Schott is re-publishing the Macabre Collage and it will be available for performances again with a view toward György Ligeti's 100th birthday in 2023. The first performance in the 21st century is still pending, and the score and performance materials are currently in preparation.
