Schott Helicon Acquires Joseph Schwantner’s works at Atherton Hill Press in Exclusive Publishing Agreement

Sep. 01, 2006

Schott Music is proud to announce that Joseph Schwantner has signed an exclusive publishing agreement with Schott Helicon. In addition to the prolific American composer’s current and forthcoming projects, Schott Helicon also acquires a number of works from Schwantner’s back catalog, making nearly all of Schwantner’s compositions available now from a single source. New works acquired from Atherton Hill Press include Angelfire, Beyond Autumn, Recoil and September Canticle.

Joseph Schwantner has earned a reputation as one of the premiere voices on the concert stage, composing in virtually all genres of instrumental and vocal music, from solo and chamber works to concerti and symphonies. His music is noted for his deft use of luminous color and fluctuating rhythms in a dramatic and unique style, heard in such signature works as the Percussion Concerto, New Morning for the World, and Magabunda, among others.

Schwantner has several new projects underway for future seasons. In October 2006, Eighth Blackbird performs the world premiere of Rhiannon’s Blackbirds, which the group commissioned and will include on their nine-month United States tour during the 2006-07 season. In addition Schwantner will compose a new work for flute quartet for the 25th anniversary season of Flute Force in 2006-07. Further on, Schwantner will write a new concerto for three percussionists and orchestra as well as a concerto for oboe, flute, bassoon and string orchestra.

Recently, Schwantner completed a series of interviews for drumstick maker Vic Firth about the use of percussion in some of his works. Videos of these interviews can be viewed at www.vicfirth.com. A new engraving of Schwantner’s solo marimba work Velocities and his Percussion Concerto, in a reduced version for solo percussion and two pianos, are soon to be published by Schott Helicon. Watch this space for more details soon.
