Schott | EAM 2019-2020 Season Highlights

The season ahead is filled with thrilling world premieres and innovative productions of works in our catalogue both new and old. Composer Alvin Singleton, pictured left, is just one of many of our composers with noteworthy premieres on their calendars. Read on for a sampling of this season's highlights.

Thomas Adès
On October 11-12, Alan Gilbert leads the Cleveland Orchestra in performances of Thomas Adès’s Piano Concerto, featuring Kirill Gerstein as soloist. Gerstein gives the UK Premiere performance of this work with the London Symphony Orchestra, led by Adès, on October 23, with additional performances following on November 29 with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, February 27-28 with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, March 20 and 22 with the Royal Concertgebow Orchestra, and April 2-4 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, all conducted by the composer. On May 13-14, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla leads the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Adès’s Angel Symphony.

Gerald Barry
From September 25 to October 4, the Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera House presents a new production of Gerald Barry's celebrated first opera, The Intelligence Park, not seen in London since 1990.  Alice's Adventures Under Ground will receive its staged premiere at the Main Stage of the Royal Opera House in February 2020

George Benjamin
The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, led by Kazushi Ono, gave the Japanese premiere of Written on Skin on August 29-30. Opera de Montréal will perform the work under the baton of Nicole Paiement on January 25, 28, 29, 30, and February 2. The work is performed again by Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France on February 14 and 16. Switzerland’s Theater St. Gallen presents Lessons in Love and Violence on May 9, 17, 20, and 29, and June 2, 6, 9, and 12.

Victoria Borisova-Ollas
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Sakari Oramo, and featuring violinist Baiba Skride, gives the world premiere of Victoria Borisova-Ollas’s A Portrait of a Lady by Swan Lake for violin and orchestra on September 19

Chaya Czernowin
Detlef Heusinger and Ensemble Experimental give the world premiere of Chaya Czernowin’s Habekhi on September 21. Thomas Dausgaard leads the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the UK premiere of Once I blinked nothing was the same on September 26, and most notably, Czernowin’s opera, Heart Chamber, will be premiered by the Deutsche Oper Berlin. They will perform the work on November 15, 21, 26, 29, and December 6.

Toshio Hosokawa
Thomas Dausgaard and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra give the UK premiere of Preludio on September 29. The Talea Ensemble performs Hosokawa’s Futari Shizuka (alongside George Benjamin’s Into the Little Hill) at the Kaufmann Concert Hall in NYC on March 7

Vijay Iyer
Named Wigmore Hall’s 2019-2020 Composer-in-Residence, Vijay Iyer has two world premieres taking place in New York this October. The first is the world premiere performance of Hallucination Party for piano solo by Mishka Momen on October 16 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center. The second is the world premiere of Song for Flint, commissioned by and performed at Miller Theatre as part of a Portrait Concert for the composer on October 24. Also on the program are the New York premieres of Crisis ModesTrouble, and The Law of Returns. Performers include Jennifer Koh and The Knights.

Noriko Koide
On February 23-24, Music from Japan celebrates its 45th Anniversary Festival and Fifth Artist Residence, by inviting composer Noriko Koide and musicologist Seiji Choki for a weekend of concerts and educational events. 

Pierre Jalbert
Carol Wincenc and the Escher String Quartet give the world premiere of Pierre Jalbert’s Flute Quintet on November 12 at the Morgan Library and Museum. On November 16, the Houston Chamber Choir, led by Robert Simpson, premiere Jalbert’s Desert Places for choir. 

Thomas Larcher
Led by stage director, Karl Markovics and music director, Michael Boder, the Dutch National Opera presents the Dutch premiere of Larcher’s critically-acclaimed first opera, The Hunting Gun, on March 17 and March 19

Hannah Lash
The world premiere of Hannah Lash’s new chamber opera, Desire, takes place at Miller Theatre on October 16-17. Rachel Dickstein directs and Daniela Candillari conducts this work, performed by three singers and the JACK Quartet. Mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton and the American Composers Orchestra, under the baton of George Manahan, perform the world premiere of Hannah Lash’s orchestrations of the Charles Ives songs, “Autumn” and “Immortality” on November 13. On November 14 and 16, the Naples Philharmonic performs the world premiere of Lash’s Double Concerto for Piano, Harp, and Orchestra, featuring the composer and pianist Jeremy Denk as the soloists. From February 12-14, Hannah Lash, joins Hub New Music for a three-day residency at the University of Michigan where they will perform the world premiere of Hannah’s new work for Hub New Music and harp. They will perform the work again in Seattle on April 24 at Seattle Symphony’s Octave 9. The Seattle Symphony, led by Thomas Dausgaard, perform Lash’s Peril of Dreams, a concerto for two harps, on April 23 and 25.

Lei Liang
Pipa virtuoso, Wu Man, premieres a new work by Lei Liang on January 18 at the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts in Boston. The East Carolina University Orchestra, conducted by William Staub, will premiere a new work for orchestra by Lei Liang on March 20

Akira Nishimura
The Jasper String Quartet performs String Quartet No. 2 “Pulse of Lights”at the Tempe Center for the Arts in AZ on December 8. The ensemble performs Nishimura’s Spring on March 6 at the Leo Rich Theatre in AZ.

Andrew Norman
The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, led by Jamie Martín, gives the world premiere of the first part of Begin, a concerto for chamber orchestra, on September 27-28. On November 2-3, Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic perform Andrew Norman’s Sustain at Walt Disney Hall (where they premiered the work last season). They perform the work again in its European premiere at the Barbican on November 20. In addition, yMusic gives the world premiere of Andrew Norman’s Difference on November 1 at the Rackham Auditorium in Ann Arbor, MI. 

Tobias Picker
On May 1 and 3, Tobias Picker conducts Emmeline at Tulsa Opera, where he has served as Artistic Director since 2016. Picker’s sixth opera, Awakenings, set to a libretto by Aryeh Lev Stollman and based on Dr. Oliver Sacks's book of the same name, is premiered at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis in June 2020, with James Robinson directing and Roberto Kalb conducting.

Matthias Pintscher
Matthias Pintscher will serve as Music Director for the 2020 Ojai Music Festival, running from June 11-14.

Bernard Rands
Riccardo Muti leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Bernard Rands’s DREAM for orchestra on Novemeber 1, 2, and 5. On November 14, Canti Lunatici is performed by the Hear & Now Ensemble, led by Jerry Hou conductor. Hear & Now also performs Rands’s Music for Shoko - Aubade on November 17. Finally, the Network for New Music Ensemble, under the baton of Jan Krzywicki, perform Scherzi for ensemble on November 24.

Alvin Singleton
On September 12, Seth Parker Woods performs Argoru II at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.. Castle of Our Skins performs Singleton’s Secret Desire to be Black on October 27 at Isabella Sewart Gardner Museum. Finally, on October 15, the Momenta Quartet performs the world premiere of Hallelujah Anyhow at the Americas Society in NYC.

Gregory Spears
Fellow Travelers will be performed by the Arizona Opera on November 8-10 and November 16-17, Boston Lyric Opera on November 13, 14, 16, and 17, and Madison Opera on February 7 and 9. The Left Coast Chamber Ensemble gives the West Coast premiere of The Tower and the Garden on November 18 in Berkeley, CA with a repeat performance the following day in San Francisco. Finally, the Cincinnati Opera presents the world premiere of Gregory Spears’s opera, Castor and Patience, set to a libretto by Tracy K. Smith, in July 2020

Miroslav Srnka
Simon Höfele (trumpet) and Kärt Ruubel (piano) perform the world premiere of Miroslav Srnka’s Milky Way on the “Rising Star” series at The Royal Concertgebouw on September 25. In addition, the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, led by François-Xavier Roth and featuring harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, perform the world premiere of a new work for harpsichord and orchestra. The performances take place on June 21-23 and are preceded by an all-Srnka Portrait Concert on June 19

Stewart Wallace
Opera Parallèle presents the premiere of Stewart Wallace and Michael Korie’s revised and reimagined Harvey Milk. Baritone Matthew Worth stars in the title role, and other notable cast members include David Walton, Christian Sanders, Tai Oney, and Marnie Breckenridge. The production, conducted by Nicole Paiement and directed by Brian Staufenbiel, runs May 15-17.

Kurt Weill

Frank Zappa
A special edition of Frank Zappa's "Orchestral Favorites" was released by Zappa Records/UMe on August 30. This three-disc deluxe edition includes the original album remastered from master tapes, a recording of a previously unreleased two-hour concert, extensive liner notes and newly created cover art.
