Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra performs John Woolrich's <em>Ulysses Awakes</em>

On October 16, Christian Zacharias leads the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in a performance of John Woolrich’s Ulysses Awakes, for solo viola and string ensemble, with principal violist Maiya Papach as soloist. The performance takes place at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN.

Ulysses Awakes was commissioned by Gavin Henderson for Dartington International Summer School, and received its premiere in 1989 by Clare Finnimore and the Guildhall String Ensemble. The piece is a striking reworking of one of Monteverdi’s beloved arias. Woolrich writes:

There are two great arias at the beginning of Monteverdi’s opera Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria: one for Penelope, and this one for Ulysses, waking on the shore of his homeland. In this retelling, the viola sings Ulysses.

Repeat performances take place on October 17 at Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, MN as well as on October 18 at Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ. Next month, Clare Finnimore performs the work alongside Thomas Gould and the Britten Sinfonia. Performances take place on November 20 at the Guildhall School of Music in London and on November 21 at West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge, UK.
