Sagunto, Hometown of Joaquín Rodrigo, Honors the Composer with Music and a Museum
May. 29, 2025
Joaquín Rodrigo was born on November 22, 1901 in Sagunto, Spain. On May 23, the city commemorated his musical legacy by hosting an intimate perspective of the great composer in a presentation titled, “Joaquín Rodrigo, un insigne compositor valenciano” (Joaquín Rodrigo, an eminent Valencian composer), featuring the composer's daughter Cecilia Rodrigo, and granddaughter, Cecilia León. The following day, Rodrigo's Concierto heroico for piano and orchestra, dedicated to the ruins of Sagunto, was performed by the pianist Juan Francisco Castillo Monreal with the Orquesta Sinfónica Lira Saguntina, conducted by Ramon Zacarías Cerdá Ramon at the Joaquín Rodrigo Auditorium in Sagunto.
Additionally, in celebration of the upcoming 125th anniversary of Joaquín Rodrigo's birth (in 2026), the Town Hall of Sagunto plans to convert Rodrigo's childhood home into a museum and concert hall in honor of the composer and his wife, Victoria Kamhi.
