US Premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s Prima Donna at New York City Opera
Feb. 02, 2012

New York City Opera presents the US premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s internationally acclaimed first opera, Prima Donna. Conducted by Jayce Ogren, the production opens February 19 with four performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House in downtown Brooklyn. Prima Donna is a French-language work that follows an aging soprano in 1970s Paris as she attempts to return to operatic stardom. Richard Morrison of The Times, London writes, “Prima Donna is a love song to opera, soaked in the perennial operatic themes of loss, betrayal, delusion and nostalgia, and saturated in the musical styles of opera’s golden age.”
Tim Albery directs the US premiere production, and Melody Moore sings the tour-de-force role of the once-acclaimed soprano, haunted by her past success and her present reality as she seeks to return to the spotlight.
Co-commissioned by the Manchester International Festival and the Luminato Festival in Toronto, Prima Donna's libretto was co-written by Wainwright and Bernadette Colomine.
