Rufus Wainwright Performs Selections from Prima Donna in Concert with Oregon Symphony

Sep. 03, 2010

The opening night of the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s 2010 Time-Based Art Festival featured a special performance by Rufus Wainwright alongside the Oregon Symphony and music director Carlos Kalmar. The concert offered a variety of music with Rufus performing songs of Hector Berlioz, selections from his own pop albums, and excerpts from his new opera Prima Donna. Soprano Janis Kelly joined the Oregon Symphony and Wainwright on stage for the Prima Donna selections.

Rufus Wainwright composed and orchestrated the music of Prima Donna and co-wrote with Bernadette Colomine the libretto which tells the tale of a struggling opera diva attempting to regain success after a difficult career. Richard Morrison of The Times, London remarks:

Prima Donna is a love song to opera, soaked in the perennial operatic themes of loss, betrayal, delusion and nostalgia, and saturated in the musical styles of opera’s golden age.
