Rossini's <em>La Cenerentola</em> in Reduced Children's Version at Teatro alla Scala

This month, La Scala mounts a production of a new children’s version of Gioachino Rossini’s beloved opera, La Cenerentola, for twelve players and soloists. The new version, arranged by Alexander Krampe, is specially geared towards young audiences, with a condensed length and a vibrant chamber reduction. Krampe’s arrangement received its premiere production in July at the Salzburg Festival, conducted by Maxime Pascal with direction by Ulrich Peter and design by Luigi Perego.

Of the arrangement, Krampe writes:

[La Cenerentola] is indisputably one of the finest and most accessible stories in world literature. This version for children allows itself only one small correction; the glass slipper, which fits on Cinderella’s pretty foot, had to be reintroduced into the piece – Master Rossini and his librettist had replaced it with a dull bracelet. As with the story, so it is with Rossini's La Cenerentola; it is irresistible to the ear. The 12-piece orchestra (including accordion and marimba) reproduces the original in shimmering, appropriately spirited ways.

La Scala’s production runs from November 4 through May 17.
