Rodion Shchedrin Celebrates His 75th Birthday

Dec. 05, 2007

On December 16, the music world recognizes the 75th birthday of renowned Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin. A composer and pianist, his oeuvre spans a variety of genres from opera, ballet and orchestra to chamber and piano music. Many new editions of his works are now available from Schott Music , including the vocal cycle My Age, My Wild Beast (ED 9625) adapted from Osip Mandelstam and the piano scores to the orchestral pieces Dialogues with Shostakovich (ED 9774) and Slava, Slava (ED 9529) a tribute composition for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. To commemorate the composer's birthday Schott Music will publish a new monograph by Ekaterina Vlasova portraying the stages of Shchedrin's life through documentary photos and music examples (ED 20224). This month the Moscow State Conservatory's Grand Hall is the site of a commemorative Composer Portrait of Shchedrin lasting several days. The concerts include Moscow's Tchaikovsky Conservatory Chamber Choir performing his choral opera Boyarina Morozova on December 14 under conductor Boris Tevlin and a performance of his Parabola Concertante by the Russian National Orchestra with cellist David Geringas and conductor Mikhael Pletnev on December 16.
