Rodion Shchedrin Celebrates 90
Dec. 22, 2022
Rodion Shchedrin celebrated his 90th birthday on December 16, 2022. Mstislav Rostropovitch once described Shchedrin as "the king of the modern orchestra," an individual who upheld the legacy and high art of instrumentation of his early advocate Dmitri Shostakovitch to a greater degree than any other composer from his Russian homeland. This is borne out by numerous compositions such as his Dialogues with Shostakovitch, the Concerto cantabile, and now also by the work Beethovens Heiligenstädter Testament which received its Austrian premiere on November 2 in a performance by the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin. Operas including Lolita, The Enchanted Wanderer, Der Linkshänder, A Christmas Tale, and his popular ballet scores display Shchedrin's unique flair for drama and dance. We wish Rodion Shchedrin all the best, joy and happiness, and above all, good health!
