Richard Ayres's Peter Pan Premieres at Oper Stuttgart

Richard Ayres's Peter Pan Premieres at Oper Stuttgart

Richard Ayres’s operatic rendition of the beloved children’s tale, Peter Pan, receives its world premiere on December 19 at Oper Stuttgart in Germany. In collaboration with librettist Lavinia Greenlaw and director Frank Hilbrich, Ayres brings to life the eternal child who, as described by Oper Stuttgart, “seems to have armed himself against all rules and regulations of civilization.”

Peter Pan (No. 45) represents Ayres’s second work for the operatic stage; his first, the chamber opera The Cricket Recovers (No. 39), was commissioned and premiered by Aldeburgh Almeida Opera in 2005. For Peter Pan, commissioned by Staatstheater Stuttgart and the Komische Oper Berlin, Ayres utilizes a larger orchestra and vocal ensemble to propel the story through his characteristically high energy and subtly nuanced music.

Performances take place on select dates from December 19 through April 10 and offer pre-performance introductions and late night talks for families with directors, dramaturgs, singers and conductors on hand to answer questions about bringing a new opera to the stage.
