Premiere Recording of Gregory Spears's Fellow Travelers Released by Cincinnati Opera

The premiere recording of Gregory Spears’s Fellow Travelers—the composer’s “moving” and “seductively beautiful” (Opera Magazine) opera based on the novel by Thomas Mallon—has been released by Cincinnati Opera on the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's Fanfare Cincinnati record label.

The live recording features the original cast from the opera’s premiere production, including Aaron Blake as Timothy Laughlin and Joseph Lattanzi as Hawkins Fuller, with Mark Gibson leading the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Following its debut in 2016, Fellow Travelers was widely hailed by critics and audiences alike, calling the opera “a heart-wrenching yet musically lucid drama” (The New York Times), “an important work” (Cincinnati Enquirer) and “one of the most accomplished new American operas” (Chicago Tribune). Opera magazine dubbed Spears "internationally, maybe even nationally, the best unknown opera composer in America, with a rare ear for subtle, arresting combinations and sonorities." The work receives productions this season with New York's Prototype Festival (January 12, 2018), Chicago Lyric Opera (March 17, 2018), and Minnesota Opera (June 16, 2018), with additional productions in 2018/19 soon to be announced.

The album is available to purchase now through iTunes, Amazon, and many additional retailers.
