Portraits and a Premiere from the Arvo Pärt Project

This month, the Arvo Pärt Project celebrates the life and work of the revered Estonian composer, with several portrait concerts including the world premiere of a new version of My Heart's in the Highlands, for voice and chamber ensemble. A collaborative effort between the Arvo Pärt Centre and St. Vladimir’s Seminary, the Arvo Pärt Project represents a series of performances and lectures meant to “[get] at the purest heart of Pärt’s oeuvre [by] plumbing the depths of Eastern Christianity”.

Events begin on May 27 with a free concert of Pärt’s music at Washington D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center. Following this is the world premiere of My Heart’s in the Highlands in its new version, featuring alto soloist Iris Oja. The premiere takes place at the Phillips Collection on May 29 alongside a program dedicated to Pärt’s chamber works. On May 31, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra perform a portrait concert of works by Pärt at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium. The program includes five of Pärt’s most beloved and celebrated works: Fratres, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, Adam’s Lament, Salve Regina, and Te Deum. Estonian conductor Tõnu Kaljuste, who received a 2014 Grammy Award for his recording of Adam’s Lament, leads the performance. With the composer in attendance, the concert marks Pärt’s first appearance in New York since 1984.

Additional events in New York include a June 2 performance of Kanon Pokajanen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur and a panel discussion at the Museum of Modern Art on June 11.
