Pierre Jalbert's “Slumber My Darling” from Another Starry Night Performed at the Shepherd School of Music 50th Anniversary Gala

The Shepherd School of Music celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a festive Gala on November 8. The evening featured a performance of Pierre Jalbert's "Slumber My Darling” from Another Starry Night by mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and orchestra conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Distinguished Resident Director of Orchestras & Professor of Conducting at the Shepherd School where he works alongside Jalbert, a Professor & Chair of Composition and Theory at the Shepherd School.

The composer notes: "Another Starry Night explores the many meanings and qualities of “night.” The complete work is a five-movement song cycle for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, which we will hear next season. This evening, we hear the final movement, "Slumber My Darling," based on a text of Stephen Foster. The preceding movement—a furious, dream-like sequence—culminates in a powerful orchestral outburst. Out of this intensity, the final movement emerges as a gently lyrical, heartfelt lullaby that brings the song cycle to a tender close."
