Philipp Maintz's Fluchtlinie Given US Premiere by Tactus at Manhattan School of Music
Feb. 02, 2009
Tactus, the contemporary music ensemble of the Manhattan School of Music, performs the US premiere of young German composer Philipp Maintz's Fluchtlinie on Tuesday, February 10. Conductor Jeffrey Milarsky leads Tactus with baritone Jeffrey Gavett through Maintz's work which features the setting to music of texts from the 19th-century poetic novel Les Chants de Maldoror, considered by some as the first surrealist piece of literature, by French poet Comte de Lautréamont. In composing Fluchtlinie, Maintz was able to work out the ideas for his upcoming opera also based on the Maldoror, to be premiered in 2010 at the Munich Biennale. Fluchtlinie received its world premiere in 2007 by the Scharoun Ensemble and conductor Marcus Creed in Hamburg.
Born in Aachen, Germany, in 1977, Philipp Maintz received his first composition lessons from Michael Reudenbach and would go on to complete a degree in composition and electronic music with Karlheinz Essl at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz. Maintz has received scholarships and invitations from institutions including the Electronic Studio at the University of Liège, the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, IRCAM Paris and the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Culture, the Supportive Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2005, a scholarship from the Wilfried Steinbrenner Foundation in 2006 and a German Government Scholarship to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris in 2007. His compositions have been performed at international festivals including the International Gaudeamus Music Week Amsterdam, agora-festival, Paris, ars nova (SWR), International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, musica (Strasbourg), Wien Modern, Hear&Now London and the Salzburg Festival.
