Peter Maxwell Davies at 75
Sep. 15, 2009
Peter Maxwell-Davies, a steady figure in Britain's new music scene since the 1950s and appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 2004, continues to compose strikingly original compositions well into his seventh decade. On September 8, Peter Maxwell Davies celebrated his 75th birthday and the celebrations commenced with a double BBC Prom performance of his music. Coming up, Davies sees performances of his complete string quartet cycle at the South Bank Centre in London on October 9, 10 and 11.
Following the concerts in September and early October, the festivities continue as Davies conducts Last Door of Light in Salzburg on October 23 and 25. He then travels to Glasgow to see the world premiere of his newly commissioned work for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Overture, St. Francis of Assisi and a performance of his first large-scale opera, Taverner.
